Mosquitoes Bring Fevered Dreams.

Terrible Beauty, Fearful Symmetry was released yesterday, on Halloween. Since I'm feeling sentimental, I'll tell you my story in it has pickles. Salty, pungent, deathly leaves of wilted mustard greens, entombed in the blackness of a clay jar for eternity. The story isn't about pickles - it's about mosquitoes and plague - but it's also about being in states of emotional suspension. Even the best preserved pickles, you understand, have to decay. Pickles, like people, smell ugly when they're left too long in jars. When removed from them, when they're prepared with love, when they're allowed to breathe, all the flavours in all their nuances thrive.

There is a metaphor up there, and it's not, "People ought to be stuffed in jars."
