Night Coughing

While the coughing during the day is intermittently annoying, the nocturnal coughing prevents me from working, which, given the hour, is what I prefer to do. Less noises, less sunlight, less people to deal with. I have so far discovered that the last two and half bottles of cough syrup I consumed haven't really done anything, nor have the pills I took apart from them for congested coughing worked much either. Not taking medication has actually helped make me feel more productive, in that I feel less tired, and if I do space out, I can snap out of it a little faster. I can't do much about the night coughing beyond sipping every combination of ginger and honey every few minutes, very warm, and running to my room when I do feel a coughing fit coming on so as not to annoy anyone.

Discovered two manga titles I want to talk about, one at great length. But, I am currently following Piano no Mori (The Forest Piano) with great interest -- I got the first four volumes after reading scanlations online. It is a lovely bit of serendipity to own, with ethereal trees. MADHOUSE is releasing an animated feature of this in July too, so that is exciting news as well. Hearing the classical piano music will be a plus. Also reading Death, the Maiden and I, which I picked up by accident while flipping through ShoujoMagic's channel. For those of you into Ghost Hunt, it could be worth the look. The art is very dated (circa early 90s), but the art for the ghosts is as disturbing as it is delightful, and the narrative so far that I've seen has been engaging. Really dug the first few lines, describing an ability to see the dead:

"Imagine that you're a signal that makes a sound, and that I'm just an average pedestrian.
"Suddenly, in the darkness, a red signal and a sound.
"Now, you have just witnessed death.
"Then, at almost precisely the same moment, a green signal and a sound--
"a sad and gentle green signal and a sound.
"The signal cannot see the pedestrian.
"This means, that even when the pedestrian is not there, the signal goes on switching.
"You are like the lonely signal."

Makes me remember I want to pick up the Eko Eko Azarak manga someday, though I have absolutely no idea how I'm going to find somewhere that sells it online short of begging friends in Japan to get it for me -- it's that old, really that old. I believe the original run went from 1975-1979. I've heard they released an OAV as recently as January 2007, not like even AniDB knows if anyone has it. It's clearly still popular material to pick from though. Someone out there must have a reprint.

In other news, Bleach anime hasn't been worth watching since nearly 100 episodes ago. It's flabbergasting how much of the evil filler arc is making it into the current manga-based arc. I had to quit watching it because I couldn't justify the time spent picking through the banalities. Having said that, the recent chapter of the manga has been amazing. It's gotten slower again, with very long fight scenes and lots of staring across the room waiting for the smoke to clear off new impossible enemies, but by golly was Rukia amazing. I could and should write a wee essay on her at some point. She's pretty much become my ideal manga heroine -- a sort of Miyazaki "perfect child", if you will. Wished more girl characters were written like her, and I don't think I've ever written essays on characters or character arch-types I look up to before.

The downside of staying away from the cough syrup is that I am awake, very awake, and who knows what I'll do when I actually need to wake up.

Try adding lime juice to the honey and ginger. It's a suggestion istara gave me a while back--lime apparently has some enzyme or such that coats the throat and soothes coughing and soreness on its own.

I was wary, as I'd tried all the usual lemon+honey home remedies with no results and what is lime but a funky green lemon, yes? No! And I didn't have fresh lime, either, just Numi's desert lime tea, which is like dehydrated lime to the UMPTEENTH power. And yet one sip and I was soothéd.

Plus, it's got that savory Vampyrich taste.

I used a Dilmah lemon tea, which frankly hasn't the flavour of lemon anywhere in it. We're out of lime juice for a bit, until our limes ripen. :(

But! I plan to go hack out some mint. Mom said ginger-lemon-honey is sore throat stuff, and peppermint is coughing stuff. Either way, it has that savoury Vampyrich taste. :)

It could be worse. When I had the sinus infection, the congestion would move into my throat so that I was both coughing and then choking. bleh!

(I hope you get better soon!)
