Fairly Awesome News

Late last year, I applied for the David TK Wong Fellowship with the University of East Anglia. This grant is offered to writers planning to write a work about East Asia. The grant includes a year's stay at the University. While this grant does not involve an interview or teaching, it does require the writer to participate in Creative Writing Seminars. One of the interesting aspects of this grant is that the recipients of the awards have solidly been Asian since its inception. The majority of these recipients were of Southeast Asian descent. One of the early Fellows was also a graduate of Curtin University, where I studied Creative Writing. The Fellow for 2006 is a fellow Malaysian.

I thought I might stand a chance with the story collection I'm currently working on, Life in Isolation. The collection includes a couple of stories I published last year -- Mosquito Story and Rahim, the latter as part of the fully collected Finches.

Back in March, I received a letter confirming receipt of my application. This evening, I received a letter from the UEA saying my application made the shortlist, reaching the final stage of the judging process. The judges will be meeting this month. At the moment, I am already disgustingly happy I got this far. I don't entirely know what my chances are here -- I mean, if the fellow for 2006 was a Malaysian writing about Malaysia, and my own collection is about Southeast Asia but largely about Malaysia, then it might be fairer for the award to go to someone writing about a different country. Or, my own presumptions about the quality of my writing may be bloated, and that'll stomp me in the foot. Or, my writing sample isn't engaging enough, resulting in writing death by gangrene. Thoughts like that currently pervade my mind.

Yes, I am freaking out. I am indeed really freaking out.

Thanks! I would love to go to England, given the chance. It does sound like a fascinating programme.

*wave* Were you previously attached with the UEA? I'd love to hear from someone who knows the place. :)

I dare say for a school so full of atmosphere and earthly sciences, it has a fair lot of international writing fellowships on offer. Extremely interesting!

Absolutely awesome just to make it so far, and on pins and needles about the rest. Yeah, politics is not in your favor, but seriously, getting this far is very, very cool. :)
